ABOUT OUR DES MOINES, IA TATTOO SHOP

We never really recommend getting a tattoo as a spur-of-the-moment decision. However, if you have made up your mind that getting a tattoo is the right decision for you and your lifestyle, then please visit our main website TattooTerminal.com which highlights our featured tattoo artist. You can also find more general information about our facility and our practices.

If you have several tattoos already, or even if you're looking to get your first, then you've come to the right place. Our tattoo shop in Des Moines, Iowa has exceeded the standards of the industry and many other shops and artists are trying to replicate our processes. That's fine with us. We take it as a form of flattery. If you're the best, of course other people are going to start doing what you are.

So how do you tell a good tattoo shop from a bad one?

The easiest thing to do is to look at the artists' portfolios. Any decent Des Moines, IA tattoo shop will be able to provide previous work of their artists and those pictures can really say a lot about the style and quality of work being done. There should be a lot of different types of tattoos in those portfolios as well. From realism to traditional, a great tattoo artist should be able to not only accommodate the varying needs of the clients, but exceed their expectations.

Aside from the artists, a great tattoo parlor should be up to code on all sterilization techniques and application. New needles and ink should be used for each client and a thorough aftercare regimen should be detailed for each client. Both of these will not only reduce the risk of infection, but also guarantee a long lasting and great looking tattoo. For more information on our Des Moines tattoo practices, visit our resource page or our main website TattooTerminal.com which gives additional reasons on why you should choose us for your next (or first) tattoo.

TATTOO F.A.Q.

IS THE INK NEW FOR EACH CLIENT?

Yes, all ink is poured into a single use container and disposed of after each tattoo.

ARE THE NEEDLES NEW?

Each needle is sterile and single use, with an expiration date. We dispose of every needle in a sharps container, just like hospitals do. All non-disposable equipment is sterilized with an autoclave on site, the same as any dentist or surgeon. Our autoclave is tested by an independent facility in order to confirm and maintain its working order.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A NEW TATTOO?

It’s important to be well rested before getting tattooed. Make sure that you have had something to eat and are wearing appropriate clothing for where you are getting tattooed. Feel free to bring a book, iPod or Walkman to listen to. Show up on time for your appointment. Don’t come in drunk or under the influence of any drugs.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY NEW TATTOO?

Remove bandage after 2-6 hours. If bandage sticks to tattoo wet the area with lukewarm water and slide the bandage off.

Wash the area gently with mild, unscented soap and water (Dial, Dove), using clean hands and making sure to remove all excess ointment, blood and ink. Pat dry with a clean bowel. DO NOT SCRUB.

Apply a VERY THIN LAYER of Aquaphor ointment 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days.

After that, apply a mild fragrance-free moisturizing lotion, until the tattoo settles into the skin (3 weeks to one month). Curel or Euccerin work well.

NO SUN for 2 weeks. NO SWIMMING or SOAKING for 2 weeks.

NO SCRATCHING OR PICKING YOUR TATTOO! DO NOT TAKE ANYONE ELSE'S ADVICE.

CAN YOU TATTOO OVER SCARS?

Yes, the skin must be fully healed before tattooing over any scar. If you are interested in getting a scar covered, please call to set up a consultation to have a tattoo artist take a look and discuss your options.

CAN A TATTOO BE COVERED OR REMOVED?

Yes, we can cover a tattoo. A cover up will be larger than the existing tattoo; your options will be limited. Working with a tattoo artist will help you figure out how to cover up the tattoo, so be flexible with your ideas.

A specialist at a laser removal facility can remove tattoos. We do not offer tattoo removal at our shop.
